Brief Review of Dell Inspiron 11z

Article by Nikiecsem

After our less than enthusiastic review of the Dell Inspiron 11z, decided to take a second look at this budget price ultra-portable laptops. The “new” Inspiron 11z is committed to making things with a new high-low voltage dual core, Windows 7 and a long battery life. If this is the updated list of holidays and ultra portable? Read on to find out.

Construction and DesignNothing has changed in the construction and design of the Dell Inspiron 11z of the initial examination. 11z keeps the design simple with a solid cover shiny, matte black frame, palmrest and silver paint. When closed, the shell is almost flat, with some projecting the lower deck, making it easy to fall into a box or bag. In the 11z keeps things simple with just the touch screen, keyboard, power button and power LED. No multimedia buttons outside of the function keys on the keyboard, and no activity or even the lighting of the touchpad buttons. Dell wanted to 11z of the project as simple and direct as possible … and made this netbook clean and easy to use.Our new facility includes a review of the Inspiron 11z “green jade” cover looks like a little “more like the lime light green eyes. The quality of paint is pretty good, but I’m not crazy about the fact that Dell charges $ 40 for each color option other than black. Of course, Dell deserves to win money on customization options, but an additional $ 40 for a plastic cover that is painted black No is not something that seems excessive. The build quality is average with a mixture of a stable support structure and exterior of flexible plastic. The chassis feels strong enough, because of strong domestic support in most regions. Support for Keyboard wrist and showed few signs of bending under pressure, but the area just above the keyboard suffers a little “plastic waste when pressed. In addition, the low pressure will cause the cover to bend and flex rock, but the painting seems to be relatively resistant to scratches.

Inside, the design of the 11z is very friendly for users looking to upgrade or replace components. At first you may notice that you can not access the components of the floor. Instead, put all users can access the Dell keyboard (which can be removed by removing three screws). The keyboard has access to an open slot, WWAN, system memory, hard drive, and mount the radiator. WWAN site was functional, the recognition of the Verizon card borrowed from a Dell Latitude D630, but it lacks the card to allow the antennas to send and receive data. Dell Inspiron does not currently access high speed wireless 11z here in the United States.

Screen and speakersThe 11.6 “screen is a big step forward for 1024×600 screen 11z typical netbook. 1366×768 HD 720p resolution offers the same resolution as traditional notebook size. This means that menus and other elements that need more vertical space no longer a problem. The panel offers good color saturation and coverage of LED backlit frovides and helps extend the battery life. The contrast is average, and varies depending on the angle to vertical. The spot Vertical viewing is very sweet little, which means the color disappeared quickly to display the top and appear distorted or reversed when viewing from below. On the positive side, the horizontal viewing angles are very good . .. making it easier to share videos online with someone sitting next to him.The speakers a little better than average speakers netbook. Speakers are not yet offering very low, but you can hear some sounds low and medium speeds. High volume levels are loud enough to fill a small room when watching a movie or listening to music. However, if you want to enjoy movies in a group setting, then you should use the HDMI port and connect the laptop to an HDTV. HDMI transmits digital video and audio to your home theater system … and even the speakers sound better than the worst speakers HDTV in most laptops.

Keyboard and TouchpadThe keyboard 11z about the same size and very comfortable to type on. The design is easy to follow, without taking the time to transition and begin to write at full speed. The key is flat like Chiclet keyboard style, but without dividing the key internal bevel. Individual key action is smooth, soft-clicking when pressed. A strange feature of Dell was the transition to the new models is the conception of the function keys around. To adjust the brightness, press the right mouse button and the brightness variations. To press F5 to refresh a page, now have to press FN + F5. Fortunately, this feature can be disabled for more advanced users. If you’ve read the first review of the Dell Inspiron 11z, then you know we do not like the touchpad. In fact, we went to call the touch screen on the touch screen 11z worse. Well, the touch screen on our review of the new unit uses the same hardware 11z ELAN touchpad, but this time, Dell has updated drivers to improve performance. This makes the touchscreen a bit “easy to use, but still suffers from many similar problems. If you keep your finger on the touch button on the left or right and try to move on the screen a number of things could happen. One of the most common reactions is zoom, which means it will resize the icons on the desktop or the font size to view documents or Web pages. We also noted, even the speed of input X and Y is not consistent. Move your finger from side to side moves the cursor over the same distance when traveling up and down. A simple test is to draw a circle on the screen with your finger, where 11z is oval rather broad. In short, we still consider to be an external mouse with this vgp-bps9 b battery accessory. Given that “portable” are designed for mobile computing solutions is very frustrating to see that the touchpad on the 11z can not do the job.

Ports and FeaturesPort selection is the average of most netbooks, with the exception of HDMI VGA instead of a high level. Dell has three USB ports, audio connectors, an SDHC card slot and a LAN connector. Users may also note that Dell went with a power connector on the size 11z complete, shared the same with all Dell laptops. Food is another change in most netbooks, Dell includes a 65W power thin with this model. On the one hand it’s nice to have a high quality diet will likely hold up adapters fastest time of the most netbooks, but the downside is very large.

Performance and benchmarksWe were very impressed with the Celeron 723, the first review of Inspiron 11z ministry, but we expected much higher for the new processor low voltage dual-core Pentium SU4100. The new Dual-heart offers a dual-core and double the cache of the Celeron 723 … synthetic tests and confirm the new CPU is much faster. The toshiba pa3534u-1brs integrated Intel graphics, also improved slightly with the new processor and Windows 7. Even if the 11z does not offer quite the same performance of a traditional laptop, it’s much better than a netbook Atom conventional engine. In our tests, the HD video 11z is able to play all our trailers. 480p and 720p videos play without any problems at all, and after some minor adjustments to the 1080 trailer plays without problems. 1080p video playback starts other netbooks we’ve tested, but in the real world, most users will see 1080p video on a netbook that offers only a 720p display.

The heat and noiseTemperatures are in the “levels of friends round” during the normal use of the 11z. He maximum temperatures in our synthetic benchmarks, but higher temperatures were centralized around the waste heat, and most users will focus on system capacity to 100 percent in many cases. The noise levels produced by the fan heat sink is minimal, even if the fan is “high”. Our review unit had a great cry before when fully or in standby mode, but this unit has not had 11z review of such problems.

BatteryThis unit includes a review of the Inspiron 11z high capacity 6-cell lithium ion 56 Wh rating. In our tests, with screen brightness at 70%, Windows 7, set the profile “Dell” balance of power itself, and 11z over remained active for 4 hours and 7 minutes. It is not very impressive when you consider that the standard battery of 28 Wh delivered more than 3 hours of battery life with a single core processor in the first revision of 11z.

ConclusionThe dell latitude d610 battery is a viable alternative to traditional measure of netbooks, which suffers from some frustrating problems. The new low voltage processor Pentium dual-core works well when combined with the integrated Intel X4500. Similarly, the HDMI connection fully functional ultra portable laptop will be attractive to those who want to connect your computer to your HDTV. Unfortunately, virtually the praise stops there.Although the battery life has given us more than 4 hours of battery life in our lab tests, it is not as impressive as we have seen in other netbooks and ultraportables. The touchpad is still the weak link in the technology for this notebook as an external mouse should never be a requirement for a “portable”. Moreover, while the starting price of $ 399 is very interesting for the holiday season, the cost of rocket fast Inspiron 11z over $ 600 when configuring a high performance system. In short, the Inspiron 11z offers a great form factor and a strong performance for a laptop travel, but the average lifetime, a touchpad annoying, and expensive upgrades to prevent us from calling it a winner.

Dell 3100 – Wireless needed – which is best – wireless card or usb adapter?

a friend has a Dell 3100 – she has broadband but no wireless on the pc – I haven’t been to look at the computer yet, but I’m assuming the options are to buy a wireless card to put in the back or a usb wireless adapter – any ideas which would be the cheaper option ?
Thanks
Thanks for that – I don’t fancy going through the taking the lid off, buying the wrong card etc – plus usb is swappable if she decides to use it on another pc or something
Cheers mate

both are about the same price, it is more a factor of do you want to open it up and know the motherboard, or simple and just plug and play? Both give you about the same power if they have the same g or n rating. I prefer the usb as you can always attach a usb extension cable to get better reception if you are in another room by being able to move it around freely. Hope this helps.

The computer in my daughter’s room is about 60 feet away from our broadcast point and there were several walls in the way. She could never get more than one bar(poor) reception and her connection often dropped totally. I had purchased a USB adapter that was supposed to have a “power boost” that increased the signal strength, but if it helped at all it wasn’t enough to notice.
I received this new adapter just a few days after ordering. It included a mini-CD and instructions on how to set up and access the driver for the adapter. The print on the instructions was very small and it didn’t explain that you need to look at the numbers on the CD sleeve to know which driver to choose when the menu came up. These are the only complaints that I have! The driver loaded swiftly, I attached the antenna to the adapter(it simply screws on), plugged it into my USB port, and was online in no time. The connection is now full strength!
I am very pleased with this inexpensive and easy solution to a serious problem (after all, I didn’t want her hogging MY computer).
