What kind of laptop should a student get?
Firstly, I think it’s necessary to remember that a laptop should be recognized firstly as a tool. I mean this in the wholest sense of the word — the laptop is simply there to act as a means to an end (I suppose that end is to help with school, not gaming or video processing or anything else).
With that said, salespeople always try hooking student consumers by introducing wild features to them (TV tuners on a student’s laptop?).
Now, I find that one of the biggest issues with students and laptops would be price. Dollar values are extra-important to students, because we’ve got so few of them! With the exception of some rich kids (I’ll address you later in this article), students generally are on a very tight budget and can’t afford to buy the latest and greatest.
I’ve decided to split students into three categories; bare-bone computer users, avid computer users, and the rich kids.
Bare-bone computer users don’t need the computer for anything besides web browsing, word processing, and movie watching. My estimate is that 80% of students are in this category. If this is the case, you don’t need anything more than a Core 2 Duo processor and probably a gig of ram (or two to be safe). A Dell Inspiron will serve fine; customizable outer shell, and respectable specs for affordable prices.
Avid computer users are like myself – we use computers for more than just bare-bone use – whether it be minor gaming, minor photo-editing, or webmastering, we take computing to the next level. I personally recommend the new 13-inch MacBook Pro; I purchased one (99 + free iPod Touch with educational discount) a couple of weeks ago and I think it would probably be the best purchase of my life, no lie. I really appreciate the change of GUI, and simplicity of Apple’s design. The MacBook Pro also has a whopping 7 hours (closer to 5-6 hours, in my experience) of battery life – meaning you don’t probably won’t need to lug around a charger through campus. I think that the compromise in price is a minor cost for Apple’s streamlined computing experience.
Rich kids don’t have a budget, so I’d recommend the new 17-inch MacBook Pro. 8 hours of battery life, two graphics card (one dedicated for powerful graphics work, the other integrated in order to save battery life). However, if Apple isn’t an alternative, then go look at Asus or Alienware laptops – try picking one less conspicuous, because it might be a target for robbery.
One thing I’m finding a lot of students doing is looking towards netbooks as a replacement for notebooks. If you’re considering this option, I’d suggest getting a desktop for home/dorm use, and using your netbook portably. Netbooks are astonishingly convenient and portable, but I think they truly lack the power to do some more daunting tasks.
I hope this clears some things up for students looking for laptops!
Dell laptop charger not working (plugged in, not charging)?
I bought my Dell Studio 17 about a year ago and the charger almost 6 months ago (replaced the original). The charger now will only keep my laptop running on AC but it will not charge. The laptop stopped recognizing the charger as a legitimate dell charger!

Your battery is a goner. If the pc runs on the charger, you have a bad battery. Make sure the battery is seated properly. If so and it still doesnt charge, replace the battery

Does not work with Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop,
Our Dell Inspiron 1525 will not even recognize this adapter/charger. I get a warning message to replace with a Dell 65W AC adapter. I will likely be returning this product unless I can find a work-around so that the laptop recognizes it.

Works Great!,
This product works great with my Dell Inspiron 1525. Dell no longer sells the charger for this computer so I was forced to come to Amazon for a charger, and was amazed at the results! It works better than the original charger that came with the computer. (: I would definitely recommend this to someone with a Dell 1525.

Blah!,
The charger does power my 1525 but it does not charge it. After reading several reviews for different adapters and/or chargers it appeared that adapters didn’t always charge the laptop. That is why I went with this product as the title of the product includes “CHARGER”. Guess the name distinction does not make a difference. My battery will not charge. Also the picture shows a 2 prong cord but I received a 3 prong. I have since purchased another “adapter” (different vendor) that appears to be the exact same, but this time I got a 2 prong cord. The battery still will not charge so I think my battery might just be dead.
So as far as powering the laptop, this adapter/charger works well.

charger do you mean battery? I’ll assume it is. Here’s the deal. Lower end dells suck especially when it comes to batteries. Dell is notorious for selling overpriced batteries that last for little more than a year. You are going to have to replace your battery but do not buy it from dell. You can buy OEM batteries from sites like:
laptopbatteryexpress.com
or
batteriesplus.com
These will sell you OEM (original equipment manufacturer) batteries that are exactly the same (well when it comes to dell its higher) quality batteries.

Its either your dell Battery died, or its an issue with your motherboard not recognizing your battery. Either ways, you should still have warranty.
So do an online chat with Dell, they should issue a new charger or they might send you a box through Fedex fully paid both way shipping, and you’ll have to place your Laptop, and make sure you remove your Hard Disk, and they will diagnose the issue.
In my case, I burned my motherboard while working in a lab, they replaced the whole motherboard in 2 weeks or so.
I wouldn’t buy another charger, until I talk to dell, they might even send you a free charger. If you talk to them either online or on the phone that is. Good luck

I don’t think there is a problem with your battery. If you know someone who uses the same kind of laptop as you, try plugging in their battery and see if it charges. It is really troublesome with Dell ac adapters because Dell “programmed” its laptop to only recognize “Dell-made” ac adapters. So, even if you are using an original dell laptop charger, Dell laptop would not let it charge the battery if that “programmed chip” was broken within the ac adapter. So don’t worry, I suppose there is nothing wrong with your battery. You can still use your laptop and let it run on charger alone, it just won’t charge your battery.
If you need to use the laptop with battery alone, it would be a good idea to get a new laptop charger. I bought my replacement at http://www.topmic.com
It’s been almost a year and my ac adapter is still working fine.
The price is little more than ebay and amazon, however, it is really reasonable price that comes with a lifetime warranty and free shipping.
Hope my answer helps! Best of luck!
